Founded in 2008, Miramichi Adult Learning is a non-profit organization funded by the New Brunswick Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labor.Our organization covers a vast territory, namely the areas of Boiestown, Blackville, Newcastle, Chatham, Eel Ground, Esgenoopetitj (Burnt Church), Baie-Sainte-Anne and Rogersville.25 during Literacy Day celebrations, with Rand Kamalaldeen, 4, and Sarah Kamalaldeen, 3, with the help of their dad, Ziad.Mary Beth Corcoran is a Chatham native, born and raised.Chatham-Kent Police Service Police Chief Gary Conn was also on hand as a special guest, reading two books to the children at the event.The Centre has several programs it runs, including literacy and English as a Second Language classes, language and skills training, as well as Immigrant Settlement and Integration Services for newcomers.The Alternative and Continuing Education Program offers a range of Independent - Self Study courses designed for adult learners who want to complete their high school education.Courses focus on reading, writing, mathematics and social sciences. Individuals who successfully complete the program receive a high school diploma.
It is populated with innovators, growers and skilled trades people who are eager to pursue new opportunities in business, agri-business, advanced manufacturing and industry. The Municipal Job Board provides municipal job opportunities for full-time, part-time, casual and student jobs (including summer student and paid student co-op placements).Following what’s described simply as “circumstances” that made them move from their Fifth St.location, officials have now set up shop at 240 King St., picking up right where they left off with their literacy and essential skills training.Callaghan said the Centre is there for anyone who wants help with literacy and language learning.“We are open for anyone who wants to build their language skills,” Callaghan added.
With many services for the community, the Centre offers them in confidence and in a culturally sensitive manner, and have people in the office who speak a wide variety of languages.
“Being [here] has actually been a benefit for our organization,” says Executive Director Tracy Callaghan.
